Physical PS5 Sales Are Shrinking to a Surprisingly Small Market

Only seven PS5 games passed 100,000 physical sales in the United States during 2026, while just two sold more than 10,000 copies in the week ending July 11.

Physical PS5 game sales in the United States have reached a remarkably low point in 2026. New figures from Circana director Mat Piscatella show that only seven PS5 games had sold more than 100,000 boxed copies year to date as of the week ending July 11.

The same data shows that just two PlayStation games sold more than 10,000 physical units during that seven-day period. Piscatella shared the figures through his Bluesky post, which identified Circana Retail Tracking Service as the source.

Piscatella did not name the seven games that passed the 100,000-copy mark. The group likely includes some of 2026’s biggest releases, such as Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert, and 007 First Light, although the available data does not confirm the exact list.

The United Kingdom’s physical market offered another sobering comparison. Christopher Dring reported that selling only 1,000 boxed copies in the UK during the week ending July 17 would have been enough to place a game ninth in the physical charts. His post placed Pokémon Legends: Z-A at No. 9, while the new Star Fox remake sat at No. 10.

That means the new Switch 2 exclusive sold 1,000 copies or fewer in the UK’s physical market that week. The figure reflects boxed sales only and does not account for digital purchases.

These numbers arrive as Sony plans to stop producing PlayStation discs from January 2028. The shrinking audience for boxed games helps explain why the company is moving in that direction, even as the decision has drawn heavy criticism from PlayStation fans and independent developers.

For players who still prefer owning a disc, the figures are uncomfortable. Physical releases remain available, but the number of copies moving through shops is becoming much smaller across both the US and UK.
