Revelations requires the base game and arrived more than a year after DOOM: The Dark Ages. The expansion adds a new run of missions before opening into an endgame mode built around rising difficulty. Players revisit several routes through levels and areas that draw from classic DOOM missions.
The content was part of Update 4, which also added the expanded Ripatorium 3.0 arena and other gameplay changes covered in the Update 4 release notes. That gives the expansion more to offer than a short campaign add-on, especially for players who want tougher encounters after finishing the new missions.
IGN awarded Revelations a 9/10 and praised the way its combat builds on the foundation of The Dark Ages while bringing in elements associated with DOOM Eternal. The review also pointed to a steep difficulty curve, though it considered the challenge worthwhile.
The 90 average does not make Revelations the top-rated release of 2026, but it places id Software’s latest DOOM content alongside several full games with strong critical scores. For a post-launch expansion, that is a very healthy position on the year’s list.
