Once Human is about to let players fight in first person

Starry Studio said the new camera option will roll into the July 9 PT update, with more first-person support and camera controls lined up in the July 10 version update.

Starry Studio is adding first-person mode to Once Human, with the change tied to the July 9 PT update. The studio also said the feature’s broader support list is attached to the July 10 version update, so the rollout is happening in stages.

The mode is meant to do more than change the camera angle. Starry Studio said it will cover the core parts of play that matter most in a survival shooter, including movement, jumping, climbing, firing weapons, melee attacks, item use, and gathering resources by hand or with tools like pickaxes, electric chainsaws, and electric drills.

  • Basic movement, jumping, and climbing
  • Weapon handling and firing
  • Melee attack
  • Use of items such as throwables, medicine, and food
  • Resource gathering with bare hands or with pickaxe, electric chainsaw, electric drill, and similar tools
  • Collecting supplies in the wilderness

Melee combat needed extra work. Starry Studio said the old third-person combo flow did not translate cleanly to first person, since long chains of hits could make the camera shake too much and fixed movement could feel awkward. To fix that, all melee-capable weapons were reworked for the new perspective.

That means melee weapons can slash while moving, light attacks still keep a feel close to the current combo style, and heavy strikes now charge while the button is held before releasing when the player lets go. A quick tap on the heavy-attack button still triggers a heavy slash. The third-person melee system stays intact for anyone who wants to keep using it.

Once Human function wheel with a switch camera option

Inspection animations for firearms and melee weapons were updated as well, and players can now inspect while moving. On PC, the camera can be swapped with Alt+C or through the Function Wheel’s Switch Camera option. On mobile, the view switch button lives in the custom layout, but players need to add it manually because it is hidden by default.

There are still a few areas where the game will fall back to third person for now, including some story performances, specific Deviation skills, expressions, and certain interactions. Vehicle handling also gets a change in this update, since the game will default to first person when players enter a vehicle in first-person mode and remember the last vehicle camera choice for the next time they drive.

Starry Studio said more work is already planned for the September version, including underwater exploration, climbing ladders, ziplines, Deviation skills, and other special status performances. The studio asked players to keep sending feedback as it continues tuning the mode across the game.
