Tarkov is about to be a lot kinder to new players

Battlestate Games said insurance, hideout progression, squad limits, and quest tracking are all getting changes aimed at easing the first steps into Escape from Tarkov.

Battlestate Games is dialing back some of the harsher edges of Escape from Tarkov for players who are just starting out, and for people who walked away after bouncing off the learning curve. In a recent TarkovTV appearance, studio head Nikita Buyanov said the game is heading toward a much friendlier early experience.

If you want a bit of background on where Battlestate has been testing bigger changes, its open Early Test Server is already live for everyone, and getting in now only takes a few launcher clicks, as explained in our guide to the Tarkov ETS.

What is changing in Escape from Tarkov?

The biggest shifts are aimed squarely at newcomers. Insurance will return items faster after death, while hideout progress will be looser at the start and then become more demanding later on. Battlestate is also handing new players expanded support packs with free gear they can store and use as they get their footing.

Squad sizes are also being trimmed to four players, which should keep new teams from running into the full weight of a five-stack right away. On top of that, Tarkov will give beginners a GPS-style tool that points them toward extraction zones, which should take some of the pain out of learning maps and exits for the first time.

Buyanov said the goal is for players to be able to get out on their own without needing a tutorial or outside map knowledge. That is a pretty clear sign Battlestate wants the early hours to feel less punishing than they have in the past.

There are more group-focused changes coming too. Shared quests with kill requirements will count progress from everyone in the party, so tasking up with friends should feel less like a solo grind in a squad wrapper. Battlestate is also replacing the current crosshair dot with a dynamic quest-item locator that points players toward nearby objectives, cutting down on the need to alt-tab for help every few minutes.

It is a clear attempt to make Tarkov easier to enter without stripping away everything that has made it intimidating for years. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
