Marvel Rivals is headed past 6v6, and NetEase has a very odd phrase for it
Creative director Guangyun Chen said the game will move into new PvE modes and a Path to Doomsday event tied to Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel Rivals is apparently not content with just being a fast, chaotic hero shooter. Guangyun Chen, the game’s creative director at NetEase, told FRVR that the studio’s goal is to move the game from “just a shooter” into a “comprehensive Marvel ‘moving anime’ experience.”
That is one way to describe a live-service superhero game. The more concrete takeaway is that Chen said Marvel Rivals is moving beyond standard 6v6 PvP, with new PvE modes on the way and a Path to Doomsday event that will feature five MCU-related updates inspired by the Infinity Saga, including new game modes and themed content.
The game has already tested that direction before. Its Marvel Zombies mode, which arrived during last year’s Halloween event, put a limited set of heroes up against zombies, and Chen’s comments suggest NetEase wants more of that kind of content in the future.
Chen also said Path to Doomsday will tie into Avengers: Doomsday, which is due on December 18. He described the movie as one of the game’s main thematic drivers for 2026. Whether that means more co-op boss fights, more event content, or something even stranger, NetEase clearly wants Marvel Rivals to become more than a straight competitive shooter.
If Marvel Rivals is headed in this direction, the next question is how far NetEase plans to push it. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
