Chris Stockman, the design director behind the original Saints Row, says he has been asked to put together a pitch for a prequel and is trying to “get the band back together,” though he stresses the project is not confirmed.
Stockman, now the head of independent studio Bit Planet Games, posted to the game’s Reddit page that he has been asked to create a pitch for a Saints Row prequel, and later reiterated that intent when contacted for clarification. He frames the idea as a chance to steer the franchise back toward its early roots, arguing the series “strayed way too far away” from what made the first game distinctive.
This is very much an early-stage situation. Stockman says a pitch has been requested and that he is attempting to reconnect former contributors, but nothing beyond that has been finalized. The notion of a Saints Row prequel will likely attract attention as Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 6 nears release, placing the two series back in the same conversation.
Stockman says he approached the IP holder after an interview with Esports Insider prompted discussion, and he told readers he wants to return the series to its roots rather than continue escalating the tone of later entries. For background on the franchise and how it has changed over time, see this Saints Row overview.
The careful phrasing matters here. A requested pitch is not a green light, and reasembling original talent can be logistically tricky. Still, the idea of a prequel focused on earlier, grittier open-world crime roots is exactly the sort of creative conversation that tends to fan wishful thinking among long-term fans. If Stockman does manage to gather key contributors and convince the IP holder to move forward, it would be a story worth watching. Until then the status is simple – there is interest and there is a pitch request, but nothing confirmed to be in development.
