ChatGPT Atlas has arrived, but not for everyone: OpenAI rolled the new AI-powered web browser out on October 21 and it is currently available only on MacOS. The browser places a ChatGPT-powered assistant in a slim taskbar on the right side of the screen that can answer questions about the page you’re viewing, suggest text for inputs, and manage tabs, open, close, or reopen them on request. An Agent Mode can carry out multi-step tasks like booking flights, placing orders, or scheduling meetings, and it will remember browsing history and preferences unless users change those settings.
Agent Mode will be limited to paying customers for now, available to ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscribers. Windows, iOS, and Android versions are said to be coming soon, but no firm dates were provided. A July Reuters report first revealed OpenAI’s browser plans, and earlier coverage tracked the project as it developed; see the site’s piece on OpenAI preparing an AI-powered browser for background and context.

OpenAI published feature details and demo material on the official ChatGPT Atlas page, showing how the assistant lives beside pages and tries to help with tasks instead of replacing the page itself. Users can control how much the browser remembers about their activity, and the company is collecting early feedback from Mac users to refine behavior. The Atlas release also sits alongside broader moves by OpenAI. The company announced hardware expansion plans earlier this year, including a significant investment in a design-led startup, suggesting future ChatGPT integrations could extend beyond software.
For now, Atlas is a Mac-first experiment in blending a conversational AI with browsing. The limited rollout means many users will not see it until OpenAI ships Windows and mobile builds. Still, the feature set gives a clear look at the company’s intent, put the assistant closer to everyday web tasks and give it permission to act when asked.
