Nvidia Admits to Render Unit Issues in New Series 50 GPUs

Nvidia confirms that some RTX 50 series GPUs are affected by missing render units.

Reports are swirling that some of their shiny new Series 50 GPUs are arriving without all the promised firepower. Can you believe it? Users have been discussing finding fewer Render Output Units (ROPs) than expected in their graphics cards.

Last week, owners of the RTX 5090 began noticing something was off. Instead of the advertised 176 ROPs, some cards were shipping with only 168 ROPs, 8 less than what was promised! Reports also surfaced about the RTX 5070 Ti, which should have had 96 ROPs, but some users found theirs came with just 88 ROPs.

The folks over at TechPowerUp even put their review unit through its paces and confirmed they were experiencing the same issue with an RTX 5090. They estimated this discrepancy could lead to a performance drop of around 4.54%. If you’re running demanding titles like Elden Ring at 4K, those extra frames per second can make a noticeable difference as games get more graphically intense.

Nvidia has confirmed that these isolated cases affect all released models within the Series 50 lineup. Thankfully, they estimate that only around 1 in every 200 cards is impacted, less than half a percent! However, any performance drop can sting for those who invested big bucks into these GPUs.

The company stated in an official message to The Verge, “We have identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5% (half a percent) of GeForce RTX models.” They also clarified that affected consumers could contact their board manufacturers for replacements. The good news is this production glitch has been fixed!

If you own an affected card, the RTX 5090 or its siblings, you can check your GPU using tools like GPU-Z to see if your card matches Nvidia’s specs:

  • RTX 5090: Should show 176 ROPs.
  • RTX 5080: Should show 112 ROPs.
  • RTX 5070 Ti: Should show 96 ROPs.

Suppose you find lower numbers popping up, like 168, 104, or 88. In that case, you might consider contacting your manufacturer for help or rolling with it if you’re okay with slightly reduced performance.

Nvidia launched its Series 50 GPUs last month, starting with the powerhouse RTX 5090, which retails for $1,999. It’s wild how much we invest in hardware these days! So what’s next? Will this affect your gaming experience? Let me know how you’re feeling about these developments!
