Obsidian Entertainment, the brains behind The Outer Worlds, is cooking up something bound to excite RPG fans. Their upcoming Xbox exclusive, Avowed, is going to be quite the adventure and will be about as long as The Outer Worlds.
For those of you who powered through The Outer Worlds, you’ll remember that the main story took around 13 hours, and if you were a completionist, diving into all the side quests, it stretched to about 26 hours. That’s the kind of commitment you’re looking at with Avowed, according to HowLongToBeat.com.
Carrie Patel, the game director, revealed to Game Informer: “The best comparison for Avowed in terms of scope is The Outer Worlds. Players can expect a roughly similar experience, just like The Outer Worlds, depending on what kind of difficulty they play on, and how thoroughly they explore and invest in side content, versus just sticking to the main crit path missions.”
So, if you’re planning to just breeze through the main storyline, expect a tight, compact adventure. But if you’re the type who loves to dig into every nook and cranny, you’re in for a longer haul.
Avowed was first teased back in July 2020. The hype train has been chugging along ever since, and it’s set in the world of Eora. If that’s recognizing to you, it’s because it’s the same universe where Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity series took place.
Now, you might be thinking, “Do I need to have played those to get into Avowed?” Well, good news! Patel cleared that up too. Even if you’re stepping into Eora for the first time with Avowed, you won’t feel like you’re missing out. They’ve designed the game to be accessible so newcomers won’t be lost in the lore.
Patel mentioned, “We’re glad to have our returning fans, but we expect that for many players Avowed is going to be their first introduction into the world of Eora, and we’re accounting for that. So Avowed takes place a few years after the end of Deadfire, which was our game just before this. There are a couple of characters that returning players are going to recognize.”
Earlier this month, we got another sneak peek. Obsidian dropped a fresh story trailer during the Xbox Games Showcase. It’s got everyone buzzing and speculating. If you haven’t checked it out yet, do yourself a favor and give it a watch. So, if you loved The Outer Worlds, then Obsidian seems to have nailed that balance of a rich, immersive main storyline with plenty of side content to keep you busy.
