CD Projekt Red, the renowned gaming studio behind the iconic Cyberpunk 2077, is broadening its horizons with ambitious projects extending well beyond traditional video gaming.
The studio recently confirmed its plans to expand the Cyberpunk franchise, including the much-anticipated sequel, Project Orion. However, their vision stretches into transmedia, with a particularly intriguing prospect being the Cyberpunk live-action project.
Unveiled in October, this project collaborates with Anonymous Content, known for its work on hits like True Detective and Mr. Robot. However, fans must be patient, as Michał Nowakowski, CD Projekt’s chief commercial officer, announced that its release is not expected before 2025. During the company’s recent earnings conference, Nowakowski elaborated on their strategy to nurture the Cyberpunk IP with ventures beyond gaming, including this live-action adaptation.
Whether this project will be a television series or a film remains uncertain. However, CD Projekt’s commitment to expanding the Cyberpunk universe in exciting new directions is clear.
Besides the live-action project, CD Projekt Red works with Studio Trigger, known for its successful 2022 anime adaptation, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This partnership hints at the studio’s interest in exploring various storytelling mediums to enrich the Cyberpunk world.
Parallel to these ventures, CD Projekt Red remains focused on its gaming roots. The studio announced that the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, Phantom Liberty, has achieved impressive sales, surpassing 4.3 million units globally. This success demonstrates the enduring appeal of the Cyberpunk universe among gamers.
