8 years later, Project Awakening is still moving at Cygames
Cygames says the open-world action RPG is still progressing, and Famitsu was shown new footage despite the long wait for a release window.

Project Awakening is still in Cygames’ hands, eight years after the open-world action RPG first turned heads on PS4.
On July 9, a Bluesky post from HDKirin pointed to a Famitsu update, and Gematsu’s translation said Cygames president Koichi Watanabe described the game as “steadily progressing.” Gematsu also noted that Famitsu was shown new footage.
I shared the Famitsu pages about Cygames' dormant projects with @salromano.bsky.social & he translated the interview that Famitsu conducted about them.
The project first surfaced in 2016 and drew far more attention in 2018 when it appeared during Sony’s PlayStation LineUp Tour with a teaser that showed a sword-and-shield fighter facing a huge lizard-like monster. Since then, Cygames has kept the details close to the vest, and the core pitch is still just an open world action RPG.
Watanabe said the team is still polishing the project as it goes. He added that the overall direction “remains largely the same,” but development has kept moving with new elements added along the way.
There is still no release window, but the new footage at least tells us Project Awakening has not disappeared. Tell us what you think in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
