Jared Palmer has left his role as Xbox’s vice president of engineering just two months after taking the position. He also served as a technical advisor to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.
Palmer updated his LinkedIn profile to announce that he had joined AI company Cognition as its new vice president of engineering. “I’m grateful to Asha and everyone at Microsoft and Xbox for an amazing year,” Palmer wrote. “Excited for this next chapter.”
Cognition operates Devin, an autonomous software engineering system. The company describes Devin on its website as a tool that can plan, write, test, and ship production code within a team’s existing codebase and development tools.
Palmer’s short run at Xbox
Before joining Xbox, Palmer spent eight months as vice president of product at Microsoft’s CoreAI division, which Sharma led before becoming head of Xbox. He previously worked for about four years as vice president of AI at Vercel.
When Sharma appointed Palmer, she said he would work directly with her on Xbox’s most complex product and engineering problems. His responsibilities included developer tooling, product judgment, and infrastructure.
The departure adds another change to Xbox’s leadership team while the company works through a broader reset. Microsoft has not publicly explained Palmer’s exit, and Sharma had not acknowledged it at the time of publication.
The move also places Palmer back in a role closely tied to artificial intelligence, an area that has been central to his career. Cognition’s focus on software development tools appears to align more directly with his previous work than his brief time overseeing engineering at Xbox.
Xbox has not announced who will take over Palmer’s responsibilities.
