Xbox unveiled a three-tier subscription model for Game Pass, with monthly plans of $5, $10, and $30, and a vocal critic, founder Laura Fryer, says the move is alienating loyal fans. The change reorganizes current tiers into Essential, Premium, and Ultimate while packing more games and perks into the top tier.
Industry momentum behind major releases like The Outer Worlds 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, High on Life 2, Keeper, and Ninja Gaiden 4 makes the new pricing look timed to capture more revenue, and Fryer bluntly suggested Xbox might not understand what they’re doing.
Xbox Founder Says Game Pass Price Hikes Are a Betrayal
Cloud gaming and subscription bundles remain central to Microsofts strategy, and the new pricing makes clear that approach will carry more of the platform’s weight. Fryer argued the move trades a hard-won reputation for value for short-term gains, saying it “feels like a betrayal, like greed over gaming.”
With this price increase, Xbox threw away their biggest advantage; they were the best deal in gaming.

Fryer also noted that Xbox’s direction looks increasingly cloud-first, away from hardware, though she suggested it could also be a sign of confusion. Some of the backlash has been public, as long-term subscribers reconsider whether the new structure still fits their needs.
Each tier will expand access and benefits. Core subscribers transition into Essential, Standard becomes Premium, and Ultimate keeps its name while gaining the largest library and extras. The rollout of the new payment plans pairs unlimited cloud gaming with in-game perks and library growth.
Ultimate, at $30 a month, will include access to over 400 games, a Fortnite Crew subscription, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, and an upgraded rewards program. Xbox outlined value details on its newsroom, including up to 30% value on select titles and point-back rewards on purchases in the Game Pass library, in its own post at news.xbox.com.
