Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet called the company’s recent outage an “unacceptable situation” after the service disruption left users unable to sign in, download games, or launch some titles they already owned.
The outage lasted roughly 15 to 16 hours. Xbox services were fully restored at about 5:30 p.m. ET, though recovery happened at different times depending on the region.

Van Vliet said the failure began with a licensing service outside Xbox that the platform relies on. When that service started failing, sign-in scenarios and entitlement checks were affected. That included viewing the full game library and launching owned games.
The same systems also support publishing and store partners, which led to problems appearing in some games but not others. Xbox’s on-call teams detected the issue overnight, declared a major incident, and redirected traffic to other parts of the infrastructure.
“Service came back unevenly across regions, which is why some of you recovered hours before others,” Van Vliet explained in his statement on X.
Earlier today, many players began experiencing issues with sign in, enumerating their game libraries and playing games. The team has worked hard throughout the day to fix the issue, and we've restored service as of 2:30 PM PDT. Nonetheless, this is an unacceptable situation, and… https://t.co/3y9TjxzKls

Van Vliet said Xbox is now conducting a post-incident review. The company wants to determine why one failing service had such a broad effect, why recovery took so long, and what changes could stop a similar outage from happening again.
He also said Xbox will provide an update on its services and planned stability work in the coming weeks. For players, that follow-up will matter just as much as the restoration itself, especially after an outage that affected access to games they had already purchased.
