Blizzard has announced that Midnight will tackle combat complexity by rebuilding every class spec, to make key information visible in the UI, and removing or changing abilities that don’t add meaningful gameplay. All 40 specializations will be adjusted to show the information players need to use an ability intentionally. Abilities that are mostly macroed, used only alongside another ability, or are simple maintenance with no strategic choice will be removed or reworked.
Some modifier auras that temporarily buff other spells will be changed or removed, with their power folded into the abilities they used to boost. Blizzard specifically called out examples like Windwalker Monk effects such as Dance of Chi Ji, Transfer the Power, and Martial Mixture being altered so you don’t have to track a pile of short timers to know when to press a button.
They also want to make abilities that currently require hidden UI info or addon calculations readable in the base interface. Outlaw Rogue’s Roll the Bones should be easier to evaluate without external tools, and the Feral Druid ability Bloodtalons has been removed in Midnight. Examples given include Restoration Druid’s Efflorescence being adjusted so maintenance is simpler, and Assassination Rogue windows being simplified by removing some rote, no-choice steps that felt like a memory test.
Beyond specific abilities, Blizzard is reviewing specs that demand very high actions per minute, have too many buttons to comfortably keybind, flood players with simultaneous procs, or generate resources so fast tracking them becomes meaningless. Blizzard says players who enjoy the mastery side of WoW will still have room to distinguish themselves. The aim is to reduce initial complexity while preserving opportunities for skill and optimization, and to make it easier for players to see what matters at a glance.
The first wave of Public Alpha will rebuild all 40 specializations under this new design philosophy. Alpha will be level-locked, so many Hero Talents and Apex Talents will be unavailable during early testing. Players are encouraged to share feedback in the alpha feedback thread. If you want the short version, Blizzard is trimming away small, fiddly systems and surfacing the information you actually need to play, while keeping the higher skill ceiling for those who want it. Pretty neat, and also kind of a relief 😅
