While Bethesda Takes Its Time, One Fan Is Building Their Own Elder Scrolls-Style RPG

The solo developer's pixel-art project, The Indie Scrolls, has reached Day 116 in Unreal Engine 5 with fantasy creatures, base mechanics, and plans for an Empress and an evil mage.

Waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6 can feel like an adventure with no quest marker, so one fan decided to build an Elder Scrolls-style game of their own. The project, called The Indie Scrolls, is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and has already reached Day 116.

The developer appears to be working alone, documenting the project through social posts. The first announcement on March 13 read, “Day 1 making my own TES until TES 6 goes out!”

That wait continues even as Bethesda has shared updates about the long-running RPG. On July 17, 2026, the studio said that most of its studio was focused on The Elder Scrolls 6, though the game still has no public release date.

The Indie Scrolls is taking a very different visual path. Its pixel-art characters include fantasy creatures with exaggerated designs, while the project’s combat and systems are still being built. The developer said the plans include “an Empress, an Evil mage and time travels (maybe)” in a social post about the project’s direction.

There is no fixed development plan yet. “I don’t have a strictly roadmap,” the developer wrote, adding that the current focus is on creating the characters and establishing the base systems and mechanics.

The project’s creature lineup is already wonderfully strange. A gold-finned mermaid appears ready to argue with anyone who gets too close, while a gladiator called “Dogman” attacks with a leather bull whip. An armored skeleton collapses into a pile of yellow bones when defeated, and enemies with more flesh appear to fall apart in a messy red splatter.

The developer’s goal is to pair the systems of a newer Elder Scrolls game with an old-school visual style. “The goal here is to make a modern TES in terms of system and mechanics, but with an old school graphics,” they explained in another post.

At Day 116, The Indie Scrolls remains very much a work in progress. Still, the project has already found a fun balance between classic fantasy, strange creatures, and the kind of pixel-art chaos that makes waiting for Bethesda’s next RPG a little more entertaining.
