Call of Duty: Warzone Season 6 landed with a surprising equipment change – players can now carry only one Smoke Grenade instead of two. The Warzone Season 6 update has been called out by many on PC for weakening a key counterplay tool against controller aim assist.
Every update includes a mix of tweaks across weapons and gear, and Season 6 was no different. Designers focused on buffing several underused guns while leaving top picks alone, and a roundup of those numbers can be found in the buffs and nerfs breakdown. The new season also arrives ahead of Black Ops 7, so balance choices are under extra scrutiny.
In the future, players will be limited to carrying one Smoke Grenade at a time, down from the two allowed in past seasons. The change may seem minor on paper, but it can significantly impact how squads approach rotations, pushes, and revives in open areas like Verdansk. Rooftop campers and long sightlines have made smokes a frequent lifeline for teams trying to move across exposed ground. Reducing the smoke count cuts down on opportunities to create cover and can force riskier plays when rotating or breaking contact.
Mouse and keyboard players reacted loudly after the patch notes went live. One X user replied to streamer ModernWarzone, saying, “They actually hate MNK players. This is F***ING WILD.” Another wrote, “Nerf the only thing that slightly nerfs aim assist if it works… CoD is f***in jokes lmao we on BF6.” A third added, “Wtf are they smoking… nobody asked for this s**t.”
Debate over aim assist has been ongoing in Call of Duty for years, with PC users often arguing that controller players have an edge. Treyarch designer Matt Scronce told CharlieIntel that the win-loss ratio in Black Ops 6 is actually split pretty evenly between the two, though Warzone-specific numbers were not addressed.
Expect the discussion to continue as Season 6 settles in and players adapt loadouts and strategies around the single-smoke limit. Some squads will swap gear or tactics, others will try to time that lone smoke perfectly.
