War Thunder Shows Off Its Unfinished M7 Medium Tank
Gaijin Entertainment is still deciding whether the American vehicle will land in late Rank II or early Rank III near the Chaffee line.
Gaijin Entertainment has revealed an early look at the American M7 medium tank, a new vehicle currently being built for War Thunder. The developer shared the work-in-progress model in its Steam announcement on July 24, 2026, while warning that both its specifications and visuals can still change.
The M7 began life as a proposed light tank meant to replace the M3 Stuart. As the project gathered more requirements, its weight increased beyond the light-tank class. Its battlefield characteristics eventually came close to those of the M4 Sherman, which was already in mass production and made a separate M7 production run impractical.
A compact tank with familiar design cues
Gaijin’s model combines several recognizable influences. The low, rounded shape recalls the M22, the cast hull carries hints of the Canadian Ram, and the transmission plate includes details associated with the Lee and Sherman. The finished design is smaller and more streamlined than a Sherman, with a rear turret stowage box, cast-hull grab handles, and protective metal guards around the turret’s observation equipment.
The M7 is being built from the ground up. Because surviving records for rare vehicles are limited, the artists have been using available documentation and photographs of the only remaining M7. That tank was originally held by the U.S. Army Ordnance Museum and is now part of the U.S. Army Center of Military History collection.
Its place in the American tree is not final
Gaijin has not locked in the M7’s position. The tank could appear in late Rank II or early Rank III, with the current possibilities placing it in the light-tank line near the Chaffee or in the space between the M22 and M6. The developer said those parts of the progression are relatively sparse and that the M7 would add another option to early American lineups.
A later developer blog will cover the M7’s performance and explain what players can expect once the model is finished. For now, the tank remains a work in progress, so its eventual placement and in-game details are still subject to change.
