Out of nowhere, Electronic Arts has decided to shut down Visceral Games, stopping their planned Star Wars action adventure game. Electronic Arts’ decision has brought upon a new team for who they’d love to continue working on their Star Wars project.
This apparently has to do something with Dead Space 2 which was developed by Visceral Games. Apparently, Dead Space 2 has not been a profitable title at all which might be one of the reasons for Visceral Games’ shut down. Rumors appear that it has been spent a lot more funds for developing the game than the profit earned afterward.
This simply means the intended action adventure game set in the time of Star Wars will get a redesign. Electronic Arts’ Executive Vice President, Patrick Soderlund has stated:
Our Visceral studio has been developing an action-adventure title set in the Star Wars universe. In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design. We will maintain the stunning visuals, authenticity in the Star Wars universe, and focus on bringing a Star Wars story to life. Importantly, we are shifting the game to be a broader experience that allows for more variety and player agency, leaning into the capabilities of our Frostbite engine and reimagining central elements of the game to give players a Star Wars adventure of greater depth and breadth to explore.
From what the press says, Electronic Arts will probably improve the game by enlarging it by adding more varieties in it. All the work will still be done on the Frostbite Engine, promising that the game will offer an amazing adventure. However, shutting down Visceral Games might hurt both sides a bit. Visceral Games is gone, and we might not know if we’ll ever see this Star Wars game in near future.
Good thing we know is that another Development team will carry the same project, trying to redesign whatever is left and maybe publish it. A lot of people enjoy Star Wars games that include really addictive and passionate stories in it. That being said, it’s time to see whether this project will be successful or not. We honestly do not have any more clues on what’s going to happen.
