Ubisoft Says Black Flag Resynced Beat Its Full-Year Expectations After Two Weeks

The sales update arrives soon after layoffs affected nearly a third of the Ubisoft Barcelona team that worked on the remake.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has already exceeded Ubisoft’s internal expectations for the full year, according to CEO Yves Guillemot. The update came just two weeks after the remake launched in early July.

The game sold 2 million copies in its first day, and Guillemot credited its early performance to the lasting reputation of the original Black Flag. In Ubisoft’s financial report, he said, “Two weeks in, the title has already exceeded the annual expectations we had.”

Guillemot also described the remake’s launch as an encouraging sign for Vantage Studios, the Ubisoft structure handling the project. He said the game was the highest-rated Assassin’s Creed release since the original Black Flag and thanked the teams responsible for bringing it to players.

That praise landed at an uncomfortable moment for some of the developers involved. Nearly a third of Ubisoft Barcelona’s staff was laid off only weeks ago, even though the studio had supported Black Flag Resynced. Tech and gameplay animator Manel Cota previously said the Barcelona team handled all of the underwater levels in a post on X.

The remake’s early sales suggest that the original game’s reputation remains a powerful draw. Players have still turned out despite changes to parts of the experience, including simplified swordfights, a day-one DLC offering, and the addition of an in-game shop.

Ubisoft’s report did not provide a new total beyond the previously announced launch figures, but the company clearly considers the first two weeks a major success. The response gives Black Flag Resynced a strong start, even as the layoffs leave questions about how the teams behind Ubisoft’s future games will be treated.
