Ubisoft has published details of Teammates, a research project that pairs a player with two AI-controlled squadmates and an AI voice assistant in a short first-person scenario. The publisher announced the project on November 21, 2025, via a blog post and X.
The demo is framed as an FPS mission. Players and two AI NPCs go into an enemy base to rescue five resistance members. The playable lineup includes Pablo and Sofia, both described as programmable companions you can direct with voice commands, and Jaspar. This AI voice assistant can offer tips, explain story beats, and even change in-game settings when asked.
The blog post explains that players will be able to tell their NPCs where to go, who to shoot, and how the narrative unfolds. Ubisoft positions Teammates as a research effort that explores new ways to make NPCs feel less like canned fodder and more like actual teammates.
“We hope players will feel like they re shaping the story themselves, not just following it,” states Virginie Mosser. “When I talk to [my AI squad mate] Sofia, she reacts to what I tell her and it changes my experience. For me, this is a real breakthrough and allows players to experience the story in their own way.”
Ubisoft says playtests already happened earlier this year and that more will follow, but it does not have public plans to ship Teammates as a product yet. An explainer video is due at some point though no firm date was given.
There are obvious tradeoffs here. The tech can add dynamic responses and on-the-fly storytelling. It can also replace roles traditionally done by writers, performers, and level designers. Ubisoft notes human creativity remains central to the work, a claim some players will greet with a raised eyebrow, given how widely AI tools are being used across art and audio pipelines.
For readers tracking Ubisoft s other moves the publisher has recently confirmed a Rayman project which it says is still some way off and has also been linked to other in-house efforts. More details are available on the official Ubisoft blog post and on Ubisoft’s X announcement.
Comments are welcome, and readers can follow the outlet on X, Bluesky, and YouTube for more coverage.
