Two Classic Lord of the Rings Games Get Fan-Made HD Texture Packs on PC

The128ReBits created custom texture packs for the GameCube versions of The Two Towers and The Return of the King, with Dolphin Emulator required for installation.

Two of the most memorable Lord of the Rings games from the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube era can now look much sharper on PC. Modder The128ReBits released HD texture packs for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, giving both games a visual refresh without abandoning their original art direction.

The packs replace the games’ environments, character textures, objects, and interface elements. The project is designed to do more than apply a basic upscale, with each texture treated to preserve the look of the original releases while adding more definition.

How to install the texture packs

These files are made for the Nintendo GameCube versions of the games. You will need the GameCube PAL ROM files for the titles, along with Dolphin Emulator. The downloads are available through ModDB for The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

After downloading the ZIP files, open Dolphin Emulator and select File in the top-left corner, followed by Open User Folder. You can also reach the same location manually at AppDataRoamingDolphin Emulator.

From there, open LoadTextures. Create the folder if it is missing, then extract the downloaded archive and place the correct game folder inside it:

  • GLOS69 for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • GKLS69 for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

The texture packs are tied to the PAL versions listed above. If you are using another regional release, the textures will not load until the folder is renamed to match that game’s exact ID. The required IDs are listed on the ModDB download pages.

What the remasters cover

The Two Towers never received an official PC release, while The Return of the King came to PC in November 2003. For players revisiting either game today, the GameCube versions provide a shared setup through Dolphin and support both texture packs.

The project also includes before-and-after comparisons showing how the custom work changes environments, characters, weapons, and other in-game assets while keeping the games’ original visual identity intact.
