Todd Howard Reveals Starfield Expected to Have Record-Breaking Launch Despite Xbox Exclusivity

The world has its eyes set on Bethesda as it releases its much-anticipated sci-fi RPG, Starfield. In a recent interview with BBC, director Todd Howard spoke about the high expectations Bethesda has for the game’s launch despite its exclusivity to Xbox platforms.

Todd Howard isn’t mincing words about the potential success of Starfield. According to him, Bethesda expects the game to attract more players at its launch than any of its previous titles, a bold statement considering the studio’s illustrious history of hits like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series.

One of the most talked-about aspects of Starfield is its exclusivity to Xbox Series X/S and PC. Many wondered if this would impact its potential reach, but Howard argues the opposite. He believes focusing on fewer platforms allows for a better-finished product. “When you’re making something exclusive, then the more you can focus,” Howard said. “Being with Xbox means there is an ease of access for us, and I’m told we’re expecting more people playing this [at] launch than anything we’ve ever done before.”

For context, Fallout 4, one of Bethesda’s most successful launches, shipped over 12 million copies worldwide on its first day in 2015. Starfield is expected to exceed these numbers, an ambitious target, especially for a title that isn’t multiplayer.

Early reviews have already heaped praise on Starfield. With scores like 10/10, the game is deemed as “unfathomably vast and boundless” and is expected to set new benchmarks in the RPG genre.
