The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will revisit a CD Projekt Red story shelved for years
Fool's Theory CEO Jakub Rokosz said the 2027 expansion grew from an idea created by Ola Motyka and Philip Weber before it was set aside.
The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will bring players to the new country of Letten in 2027, but the expansion’s story is much older than its announcement. CD Projekt Red developed the premise years ago, then set it aside until the right conditions allowed the project to move forward.
CD Projekt Red introduced the expansion alongside The Witcher 3 Remastered at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 on August 25. Fool’s Theory is working with the studio on the DLC, which will follow Blood and Wine, the last major expansion for The Witcher 3.
Fool’s Theory CEO Jakub Rokosz explained in an interview with Eurogamer that Ola Motyka and Philip Weber, both writers on The Witcher 3’s base game, originally created the story inside CD Projekt Red. “The story was conceived, way back when, in CD Projekt Red by Ola Motyka and Philip Weber,” Rokosz said.
The idea was put aside “for various reasons,” according to Rokosz. Years later, it resurfaced, and Fool’s Theory began developing it after the studio had grown enough to take on the project. Rokosz described the timing as a case where the “stars had to align.”
Weber later described the emotional cost of shelving the project, writing that the original team was “heartbroken when our story disappeared in the vaults.” He also summed up the long wait with a simple line: “Good things take time.” Fool’s Theory eventually took the old story’s “bones” and developed them into Songs of the Past, giving the abandoned concept a path back into Geralt’s world.

Letten gives Dandelion more room
Songs of the Past will take Geralt to Letten, Dandelion’s home, as he searches for the bard. The setting is also designed to give Dandelion a deeper role in the story. CD Projekt Red senior quest designer Despoina Anetaki said the original game did not leave much room to develop him, while the new expansion allows the team to tell more of his story and show sides of his personality that players have mainly encountered in the books.
Dandelion’s philosophical conversations with Geralt in the books helped point toward the kind of material the expansion can now bring into the game. Letten, described by CD Projekt Red as a “fully realized open world,” will serve as the setting for that character-focused story.
The adventure will also feature Belleteyn and give Geralt a silver chain as a weapon. Both details are tied to new firsts for The Witcher series.
The expansion remains planned for 2027
Songs of the Past will be the third expansion for The Witcher 3. Its planned 2027 release comes after a decade without a new expansion and 12 years after the original game, although CD Projekt Red has not announced a specific release date.
CD Projekt Red announced the expansion alongside The Witcher 3 Remastered, which will arrive on September 29, 2026. For now, the older story concept behind Songs of the Past is one of the clearest details about what the expansion will offer while its full release plans remain undisclosed.
