The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will receive a major upgrade on September 29, when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launches as a free update for owners on XBOX Series X|S. The same announcement also confirmed Songs of the Past, a new expansion scheduled for 2027. The details come from Xbox Wire’s announcement, which outlines the changes coming to Geralt’s next adventure.
Remastered brings visual and combat improvements
Revealed during gamescom Opening Night Live, Remastered will refresh the Continent with improved textures for environments, non-player characters, and monsters. Lighting, shadows, and ray tracing are also being reworked, giving wilderness areas and busy city streets a different look as the time of day changes.

The combat system is receiving attention as well. Updated animations will let Geralt close the distance to enemies more smoothly, while new finishers include an Aard-based attack shown in the trailer. An adaptive camera will move closer during smaller encounters and pull back when Geralt faces more opponents, keeping more of the fight in view.

Traversal and general movement are part of the update too, but the largest mechanical revision concerns skill trees and character progression. The system will be rebuilt with new perks and abilities, reworked existing skills, and redesigned trees that give players more room to shape Geralt’s build.
New customization and mod features
- Transmogrification: Players will be able to change the appearance of weapons and armor without giving up their preferred statistics.
- Cross-platform mod support: Mods on XBOX Series X|S will support custom quests, weapons, equipment, balance changes, and other player-made content.
- Expanded photo mode: New poses, camera controls, frames, filters, and models will provide more ways to capture scenes.
Remastered will also support XBOX Play Anywhere, allowing players to continue their upgraded adventure across XBOX Series X|S, PC, and XBOX-supported handheld devices.
Base-game owners will receive 2 expansions
When the upgrade launches on September 29, all owners of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on XBOX Series X|S will receive Remastered at no additional cost. Players who own only the base game will also receive Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for free, with the offer extending to XBOX One owners.
Digital owners will get the 2 expansions added to their libraries automatically. Players with disc copies can claim them through the Store.
Songs of the Past takes Geralt to Letten
Songs of the Past will be the third expansion for The Witcher 3. Its story will take Geralt to Letten, the homeland of Dandelion, as the pair travel there to help with a personal matter. The region appears peaceful at first, but a hidden darkness will soon call for a witcher’s skills.
The expansion will add new monsters, new mutagens, and a chain weapon that gives Geralt another option for controlling groups of enemies. The chain is also a reference to the intro cinematic from the original The Witcher game. Songs of the Past is scheduled to launch in 2027, is available to wishlist on XBOX Series X|S, and will include the upgrades introduced by Remastered.
