Nintendo and Illumination have released a trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and confirmed an April 2026 release date, while announcing new cast members for the film. The film adapts the 2007 game Super Mario Galaxy and will bring the franchise back to cinemas in the spring of 2026. The main trailer is available on YouTube below and includes a separate short spot that features a clip of the Rosalina voice recording.
The headline cast additions are
- Brie Larson as Rosalina
- Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
They join previously announced leads including Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.
Brie Larson’s casting has prompted renewed discussion because of past public controversy tied to remarks she made during press for another film and the subsequent review bombing of Captain Marvel. That episode helped push Rotten Tomatoes to adopt a verified rating system to reduce score manipulation.
Benny Safdie’s involvement is notable because he is known for gritty, director-driven work on films such as Uncut Gems and Good Time. Casting an actor with that background for a Mario franchise role is an unexpected turn, and it suggests the film will keep some surprising choices in its voice roster.
The movie’s choice of Super Mario Galaxy as the source material lines up with renewed attention on those games following their return to Nintendo Switch earlier this year. For more about the Switch re-release of Galaxy see the console coverage on the site that reported their Switch arrival.
If the cast and tone shown in the trailer hold, the film will mix blockbuster animation with a few unexpected creative choices in casting and voice direction, and the April 2026 date gives the production time to finish animation work and marketing for a wide release.
