The PS4 exclusive, The Last Of Us Part 2, has undoubtedly become a sensation shortly after its release. Thanks to Sony Interactive Entertainment for sharing the numbers, Naughty Dog’s apocalyptic title has managed to sell a whopping 4 Million Copies worldwide in its first three days of launch. Further data has discovered that some regions have also overcome the number of sales compared to its predecessor.
Naughty Dog’s creation has managed to reach a high number of sales, even in regions where previously couldn’t. Japan, for example, has led to selling over 178,000 copies in just three days, which is a milestone for this region.
The Nintendo Switch usually dominates the region, but the release of The Last of Us Part 2 has exceeded that. According to Famitsu, Japan’s entertainment software sale charts is as follows:
PS4 – The Last of Us Part 2 – 178.696
NSW – Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 73.680
NSW – Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics – 32.673
NSW – Ring Fit Adventure – 32.663
NSW – Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 7 – 14.062
NSW – Namcot Collection – 9.532
NSW – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 9.251
NSW – Pokemon Sword / Shield – 9.195
NSW – Splatoon 2 – 7.886
NSW – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 6.137
This change on the list proves how The Last of Us 2 has managed to outrun some previous PS4 Exclusives in Japan, which margin hasn’t been this notorious. Titles such as Spider-Man and God Of War have also failed to reach this success. The list doesn’t end here.
Back to its enormous launch, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has sold 2.7 million copies in the first week of launch, which is way behind what Naughty Dog achieved with this title.
Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog’s vice president, has expressed himself on the success:
We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar.
The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog. We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone.
Would you believe the rumors that this is the last series of the franchise? After seeing these numbers, it somewhat becomes amusing but shockingly bright that Naughty Dog would probably continue to strive in the same direction. Knowing that Uncharted is most likely of the plans, we may see yet another Last of Us series.
