After much speculation, it looks like a remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is coming soon. This article compiles all the details surrounding its rumored announcement and potential release timeframe.
Bethesda has partnered with 2K Games to revitalize The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, originally launched in 2006. Widely regarded as one of the best games ever created, this fourth entry often finds itself overshadowed by its successor, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, which remains among the highest-selling titles in gaming history and has seen multiple remasters released over time.
As fans eagerly await news about The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda appears ready to remind everyone just how special the fourth installment truly is.
No official confirmation regarding The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has been made by Bethesda yet.
The initial rumors sparked in late 2022 when discussions arose during an FTC investigation into Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, suggesting that a remake or remaster could be launched within that fiscal year.
Time passed without any announcements until December of last year when reports indicated that Virtuos was working on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake using Unreal Engine 5. This project was considered part of January’s Xbox Direct presentation, but no news emerged from that event either. Lack of an official statement hasn’t dampened speculation around this expected title.
The release date for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remains unconfirmed at this time.
However, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb recently mentioned that he’s heard “it’s going to shadow drop at any moment this month.”
If you’re unfamiliar with the term “shadow drop,” it refers to releasing a game suddenly without prior notice or an established launch date.
A surprise release like this would catch many off guard; however, it’s not outside Bethesda’s realm of possibility given their previous experience with similar tactics—like when Tango Gameworks unexpectedly shadow-dropped Hi-Fi Rush in January earlier this year.
This marketing approach didn’t yield desired results though; Grubb noted back in April that Hi-Fi Rush “didn’t make the money it needed to make.” Despite very important acclaim for Hi-Fi Rush, insufficient promotion may have contributed to poor sales performance leading Tango Gameworks towards closure later on in May due to financial strains after its launch.
This setback hasn’t deterred Bethesda from attempting another shadow drop strategy with upcoming projects like Oblivion’s remake.
Bethesda has demonstrated success with past remasters so there’s reason for optimism regarding The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake’s development process.
In fact, back in 2016, they released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, bundling all three downloadable content expansions along with updated graphics enhancements. Just one year later came Skyrim VR, followed by an Anniversary Edition launched in 2021, which introduced fresh content through Creation Club additions and new features overall!
This background sets expectations high for what fans might find within The Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion’s eventual unveiling—likely including both Knights of the Nine & Shivering Isles expansions alongside necessary visual upgrades as well!
