The Bastion tank arrives in Helldivers 2 and it changes how battles play out

The TD-220 Bastion MK XVI is a four-seat tank destroyer with a heavy coaxial machinegun and a 120mm high-velocity cannon that requires 35,000 Reqs to unlock.

Arrowhead added the TD-220 Bastion MK XVI to Helldivers 2 in the February 3, 2026 update as part of Super Earth’s offensive against the Automaton stronghold at Cyberstan. The vehicle is a return from the first game and joins the stratagem pool available to players during missions.

The Bastion is a four-seater tank destroyer. It seats a driver, a gunner, and two passengers positioned on the vehicle’s shoulders. Its primary armament is a 120mm high-velocity cannon. It also mounts a heavy coaxial machinegun for close work. The studio describes the tank as a stratagem-class drop, and players must spend 35,000 Reqs to unlock it.

The tank’s handling and weapon constraints shape how squads must use it. The Bastion moves slowly, roughly 10% faster than sprinting, and it has a very wide turning radius. Its cannon cannot rotate on the X-axis, which confines the gunner’s fire to a forward cone. That locked-turret design forces coordination. The driver must maneuver the hull to bring new targets into the gunner’s firing arc.

Those limitations are deliberate trade-offs. The Bastion gives a single squad a lot of firepower while taking one of just four loadout slots, carrying a heavy cooldown, and arriving via a slow drop. Vehicles have long been costly choices in Helldivers 2 because they replace other powerful options like personal nukes or turrets. The Bastion’s design emphasizes teamwork and makes the driver an active combat role rather than a passive transport.

Community reaction has been swift. One highly upvoted Reddit thread imagines an Automaton complaining about how strong the Bastion is, reflecting how some players already view the vehicle as dominant in the current meta. That thread is among the posts getting the most attention.

I can't believe Arrowhead released this thing in this state…

The Bastion’s locked turret also ties it to a real-world precedent. Early tank destroyers used fixed guns and required the hull to be aimed for wide arcs of fire. Documentation about those designs is available on the tank destroyer encyclopedia entry.

After two years of iterative changes to vehicle systems, the Bastion represents a heavier, more durable option than earlier jeeps and mechs that players found fragile. Its role is intentional: a vehicle drop should feel like reinforcements arriving to turn a bad fight into a winnable one, provided squads can use it effectively.
