Calamity, one of Terraria‘s largest content mods, will cease development after much of its team stepped away. The developers also pointed to the project’s troubled history and recent drama surrounding its owner as reasons they no longer want to continue.
Calamity launched in 2016 and grew far beyond a typical fan-made mod, adding more than 1,000 items, dozens of bosses, five biomes, four difficulty modes above the base game’s hardest setting, and more than 40 original songs. The project reached the Steam Workshop through tModLoader in 2022. It also reached millions of downloads worldwide and surpassed 9 million Steam Workshop subscribers through its Steam Workshop page, and Re-Logic invited members of the team to work for the studio.
“We will unfortunately be ceasing all development of Calamity,” the team wrote in an announcement dated August 10, 2026, shared through a Reddit post about the decision.
According to the announcement, many developers had become uncomfortable with owner and lead developer Ozzatron after further controversy. Before Ozzatron took over development, former Calamity leader Fabisol was accused of similar grooming behavior in 2022. An August 8 Reddit investigation accused Ozzatron of being heavily involved with, and permissive toward, an NSFW server where minors allegedly remained. The collection alleged that an 18+ rule was added after the server became known around 2020, without removing underage users who were already there, and that some minors who left were later invited back. It also alleged attempts to suppress the issue after it surfaced among the development team. Those claims remain allegations and have not been independently established. Others had retired, moved away, or simply lost the passion to keep working on the mod. The team described a long history of promises and disappointments that left members feeling personally betrayed. Several developers had already left, and the remaining contributors said they wanted to move on to projects that were not connected to Calamity’s damaged reputation.
Asset removals will be difficult to complete
The developers also addressed requests to remove assets from Calamity. They said the team had received a large number of those requests, but the lack of people available to work on the mod makes removing and replacing every affected asset practically impossible.
Ending development was described as the closest the team could come to honoring those requests. The announcement did not promise a broad cleanup, with the developers explaining that they no longer had the time or manpower to handle the volume of work involved. The community was also asked not to harass contributors who submitted asset-removal requests.
Legal concerns block new forks and reuploads
Future community projects face another restriction. The developers said legal concerns mean Calamity cannot be reuploaded or forked for distribution. They clarified that projects such as Fabric and add-ons are still allowed, including tools such as Calamity Fables, but a new version of the mod itself cannot simply be created and uploaded.
The existing Calamity build remains available and playable, but players should not expect the large content updates that drove the mod’s development for almost a decade.
Ozzatron holds sole ownership of Calamity’s GitHub repository. The team said it had been unable to reach him, leaving any handoff of the project dependent on his participation. A follow-up message claimed he had been uncommunicative for more than a day while contributors sought payment for unpaid labor bounties and several thousand dollars in Patreon funds. Contributors said they had not been compensated and believed Ozzatron had no intention of paying them, leaving the resolution of those outstanding payments dependent on his participation as well.
The team did not outline a new development group or a replacement project. Instead, its message focused on closing this chapter and thanking the community for supporting Calamity for roughly a decade.
Calamity’s announcement comes while Re-Logic continues working on Terraria itself. At the end of July, the next Terraria 1.4.5.7 update was still in development, with more items planned and crossplay groundwork underway. By August 10, the patch still needed localization and platform submissions, and no launch date had been announced.
Calamity’s run may be ending, but its place in the Terraria community is difficult to miss. Tell us what you think about the decision in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
