Terranigma will finally receive an official U.S. release in early 2027, with Clear River Games bringing Quintet’s SNES real-time RPG to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, Steam, and GOG. A physical PS5 edition is also planned. It will be the first official North American release for the 16-bit cult favorite, as well as its first appearance on a platform newer than the Super Nintendo.
The project is planned across digital and physical formats on console and PC, although Clear River Games has specifically confirmed the PS5 and PS4 editions so far.
The game originally debuted in Japan in 1995 before Nintendo published it in Europe and Australia in late 1996. Licensing issues, along with the closure of Enix’s U.S. office in late 1995 before the company’s merger with Square, kept Terranigma from reaching American players through an official release. Its European launch also arrived as the industry was moving toward the 3D visuals associated with the original PlayStation and Nintendo 64.
Terranigma Returns With New Music and Key Art
Clear River Games’ release will feature new key art from original illustrator Kamui Fujiwara, along with new music from members of Terranigma‘s original team. The game will also be playable for the first time at Gamescom this week, giving attendees an early look at the long-unavailable RPG.
The Steam listing describes a version that stays close to the original game’s presentation while adding upgrades, tweaks, and bonus features intended to make it easier for current players to pick up.
Terranigma follows a boy tasked with resurrecting Earth and restoring its development, taking the story from primordial evolution through the present day. Its real-time combat and globe-spanning adventure helped make it one of the most respected RPGs in the Super Nintendo library.
The announcement trailer credits publisher Square Enix, original developer Quintet, and illustrator Kamui Fujiwara, the mangaka responsible for the game’s character designs. It also offers a look at how closely the new release tracks the Super Nintendo original.
Terranigma is part of a trilogy that also includes Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia. Quintet was also responsible for ActRaiser, placing Terranigma within one of the Super Nintendo era’s best-known action RPG lineups.
Why Terranigma Never Reached North America
The game’s PAL-only history created a technical issue for English-speaking players. PAL television standards refreshed at 50Hz, compared with the 60Hz NTSC standard used in the U.S. and Japan, so the European version ran at a different speed from the Japanese original.
Fan translation patches and console modifications offered unofficial ways to play Terranigma over the years, but an official North American release remained out of reach. Rights connected to Quintet and modern Square Enix reportedly added to the difficulty of bringing the RPG to new audiences.
Clear River Games has not announced a more specific release date or pricing for the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, Steam, and GOG versions. For now, early 2027 is the confirmed window for Terranigma’s U.S. debut.
