Two days after the announcement of Team17 officially entering the NFT business, the company decided to end the MetaWorms NFT project. On Tuesday, in an official press release, the company stated the following:
Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project. We have listened to our teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space.
The decision comes after a backlash from its developers, such as Playtonic Games and AGGRO Crag Games, who have condemned Team 17’s decision to produce and engage with NFTs (non-fungible tokens).
Previously, Team17, together with Reality Gaming Group, decided to collaborate on these NFT collectibles named MetaWorms. They were planned to come in as a unique and generative artwork that will depict content from the Worms franchise, designed to be high quality and low energy consuming collectibles. The critics were too harsh to continue with the project, resulting in its termination in a record time.
