Team Cherry co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen told Bloomberg they might not travel to The Game Awards on December 11 because they think Hollow Knight: Silksong is unlikely to beat Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in several categories. When asked whether they planned to attend, Pellen answered “Maybe not. We’re pretty busy.” Gibson suggested a loss was probable, saying “This year I think we’re safe. I think Expedition 33 – it’s exceptional and broadly palatable. Whereas we’re on that knife’s edge, where it appeals to some and infuriates others.”
Silksong is up for five awards including Game of the Year, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Independent Game, and Best Action/Adventure Game, while Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur has a record 12 nominations. Winners will be determined by a blended vote with a jury of media outlets (90 percent) and public voting (10 percent), a system that bring us to the final results. The Bloomberg interview also confirmed Team Cherry is working on DLC for Silksong and is discussing how elements of the game could show up in other projects, comments the studio made while reflecting on Silksong’s release and community reaction.
The scale of Silksong’s launch makes the crew’s comments easier to read in context. Our coverage notes the game’s release drove record viewership on Twitch and put heavy load on storefront infrastructure, which shaped how many players discovered the game in the first days. See Hollow Knight Silksong launch makes Twitch its most watched game for more on that spike. Team Cherry has also been dealing with post-launch noise, a translation problem in Simplified Chinese led to a large wave of negative Steam reviews and the developer said fixes were on the way, a matter we covered in our report on the translation issues.
