Tarkov’s latest update appears to have slipped in a coin nobody expected

Battlestate Games recently pushed Escape from Tarkov 1.0.4.5, a patch that brought balance changes and performance work to the extraction shooter. It also seems to have introduced one item that never made the official list: TarCoin.

Players first started posting about the mystery barter item on Reddit and X, where screenshots showed a small new currency-like object that had not been called out by Battlestate Games. At the time of writing, its purpose was still unclear, and it had not shown up on sites such as Tarkov Market.

The in-game description calls TarCoin “a mysterious currency that appeared in Tarkov after the Contract Wars had already begun” and adds that the motto on the coin points to a well-known company. It also describes the item as rare and prized by everyone without exception.

What makes the find even stranger is how limited the item appears to be. TarCoin cannot be sold on the Flea Market, and players cannot discard it in raid. That has left the community with more questions than answers, especially since Battlestate Games never formally mentioned it alongside the patch.

Escape from Tarkov’s economy has already been under heavier scrutiny lately, so any new barter item is going to draw attention fast. Some players have also pointed to the game’s growing link with Escape from Tarkov: Arena, especially after the Casus Belli event focused on connecting the two projects more closely.

For now, the item has been reported in places like the biggest chalet on Lighthouse and Dorms Marked, though it may appear in other spots as well. Until Battlestate Games explains what TarCoin is for, players are left doing the usual Tarkov ritual of looting first and asking questions later.
