Civilization 7’s Steam rating is almost evenly split. Some players applaud its streamlined approach, while others feel it lacks the depth of earlier entries. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of publisher Take-Two Interactive, suggests this mixed reaction is nothing new for the series.
In a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, Zelnick acknowledged that Civilization 7 faced challenges at launch but pointed out that every new Civilization platform iteration has met with some consumer concern. He explained, “Every time we’ve come out with a new platform iteration of Civilization, there’s been some consternation on the part of consumers who love the franchise and are beholden to its prior iteration.” He added that updates and changes usually follow, leading to a long sales cycle where players eventually come to appreciate the game.
While Zelnick admits there is “probably a bit more work to do,” he is pleased with the game’s commercial success, noting that “sales are strong.” He also expects critical reception to improve, saying, “We’re really happy with how it’s going—and I think in the fullness of time, it’ll be just great.”
Looking at the numbers, Civilization 7 ranks as the 8th best-selling game of 2025 in the US, according to analyst Mat Piscatella via Gamespot. However, its current player count on Steam is noticeably lower than previous entries, with 9,537 players compared to 43,307 for Civilization 6 and 15,981 for Civilization 5 at similar points post-launch.
Despite the divided opinions, some critics have praised the game’s changes. Robert Zak from PC Gamer found Civilization 7 the most streamlined and accessible in years, mainly benefiting multiplayer pacing. However, he noted it might leave some players missing the complexity of earlier titles.
