A fresh take on the classic Super Mario Bros. will arrive on PC on September 13, thanks to YouTuber ‘JoeMama’ and a group of modders. As a fan remake titled Super Mario Bros. Remastered, it aims to breathe new life into the timeless NES original by rebuilding it from scratch, incorporating improved physics, audio, and visuals.
Unlike the original’s strict 4:3 aspect ratio, this version will support full widescreen monitors, allowing players to see more of the levels on their screens. Additionally, the modders have added a neat twist: resource packs that allow you to customize the game’s appearance and sound. For example, you could switch to a style resembling the SNES’s Super Mario World, or try other aesthetic changes that completely alter the game’s vibe.
This tool will let players craft their own stages, experimenting with level design in a way the original never allowed. While it’s unclear whether sharing these custom levels will be possible, the editor alone opens up numerous creative possibilities. The project doesn’t stop at just the classic game either. It will also include The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. Special, and a revamped All Night Nippon: Super Mario Bros. So, it’s not just a simple remake but a more thorough package for fans of the series.
Now, you might wonder how this fan project will avoid Nintendo’s usual takedown notices. The modders claim they’ve taken precautions by not including any original game assets within the release. Instead, the remake requires players to provide their own ROM, similar to how some N64 recompilation projects operate. Whether that’s enough to keep Nintendo at bay stays to be seen, but it’s a clever workaround.
Super Mario Bros. Remastered will be available for free on PC starting September 13th. For a sneak peek at what’s coming, check out the official trailer below. It covers many of the features and gives a solid idea of what to expect from this fan remake.
