Subnautica 2’s development is undergoing a significant shift as Krafton has replaced key leadership figures with Steve Papoutsis, known for his role in the sci-fi horror flop The Callisto Protocol. This change happens less than six months before the expected release, raising questions about the game’s future.
The original creative heads at Unknown Worlds, including co-founder Charlie Cleveland, CEO Ted Gill, and Technical Director Max MaGuire, have been removed. Papoutsis, who previously worked as executive producer on the Dead Space series and later as Chief Development Officer on The Callisto Protocol, now takes over as CEO of Unknown Worlds. He will likely oversee the final development stages of Subnautica 2.
Fans might find this transition unsettling, especially since many criticized Subnautica: Below Zero for lacking the horror that made the original game so gripping. Krafton’s statement emphasizes a commitment to delivering the best possible experience; however, the timing and nature of this leadership change may hint at potential delays or shifts in direction.
A Very Late Change
Krafton announced the leadership swap in a brief press release, noting that while they wanted to keep the co-founders involved, the decision was made immediately. Papoutsis replaces Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire immediately. The company expressed well wishes to the former leaders for their future endeavors.
This move comes as a surprise given the proximity to the planned 2025 release. Krafton’s CERO Kim Chang-han stated, “There is nothing more important than the gamer experience,” promising a more complete and satisfying entry under Papoutsis’s guidance.
However, the Subnautica community has reacted with skepticism. Reddit threads already label the game “cooked,” fearing that the change could compromise the game’s quality or push it into 2026. Whether other studio roles have shifted remains unknown.
Given Papoutsis’s background with The Callisto Protocol, a game that struggled critically and commercially, some fans worry this might affect the tone or direction of Subnautica 2. Still, his experience with survival horror might influence the sequel to recapture the eerie atmosphere fans loved in the original.
It’s a lot to take in, especially for a series that has built a reputation on its distinct underwater exploration and tension. Will this unexpected leadership change end up helping or hurting the game? Only time will tell, but the community is watching closely.
