Starfield is crashing on PS5, and PS5 Pro owners are seeing it too

Players are reporting repeat crashes on Sony's consoles, and testing suggests graphics settings and PSSR 2 may affect how often the problem shows up.

Starfield is running into a serious crashing problem on both PS5 and PS5 Pro, and the issue is not isolated to one corner of the game. Reports have been building on Reddit as the game enters its first weekend on Sony’s consoles, with players describing repeat crashes in regular play.

The problem also surfaced during testing on PS5 Pro, where different graphics modes were tried with an uncapped frame rate. Crashes appeared across Visuals, Enhanced, and Performance modes. Locking the frame rate to 60 fps let the game move past the city section, but crashes then returned while exploring the wilderness.

One workaround was to disable PSSR 2, the PS5 Pro’s AI-driven upscaler, though the system display menu. After that change, the game had not crashed during several hours of play. That said, the same fix does not help base PS5 owners, where crashes are also being reported.

Digital Foundry saw the same behavior in its technical review of Starfield on PS5 and PS5 Pro, writing that both consoles crashed regularly during testing and that the game became unresponsive after the crash, requiring a system-level restart.

Bethesda has not pushed any extra update for Starfield on PS5 yet, and the game launched on April 7 for Sony’s console. The hope now is that a fix arrives soon, because this type of issue can turn a fresh release into a mess fast. Have you run into crashes in Starfield on PS5 or PS5 Pro?
