Starfield’s community patch, a fan-driven effort to fix and improve Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG, is at risk of shutting down. The modding team behind it is losing members fast, with some stepping away due to burnout and waning interest in the game. This could mean the end of one of Starfield’s most popular unofficial fixes unless new volunteers step up.
Since its 2023 release, Starfield hasn’t captured the magic of Bethesda’s earlier hits like Skyrim or Oblivion. The game’s Steam rating has dipped to a mixed 58% positive, reflecting a growing dissatisfaction among players. Even the most dedicated fans who created the Community Patch feel the strain.
Pickysaurus, a key modder on the project, shared on the Starfield Modding Discord that the patch hasn’t seen updates since September 2024 because core team members lack the time and motivation to keep it going. He has less time due to adopting a new puppy, while others have grown disenchanted with Starfield for reasons like limited replayability and the controversial paid modding scene.
Pickysaurus is now inviting anyone interested to take over the patch’s maintenance. The role involves gathering community bug fixes, preparing new patch releases, and writing changelogs. He admits it’s a lot of work, and if no one volunteers, the project might be retired. Users would then be directed to Arthmoor’s Unofficial Starfield Patch, which hasn’t been updated since December 2024.
This situation highlights the challenges fan projects face when the original game doesn’t fully meet expectations or maintain player enthusiasm. The community patch was a labor of love, but without fresh energy, it may soon be a thing of the past.
