Star Wars: Dark Forces, is a seminal first-person shooter (FPS) game that debuted in 1995. After nearly three decades, Nightdive Studios has announced a remastered edition of the classic game, slated for release on February 28, 2024.
In the original Star Wars: Dark Forces, players stepped into the shoes of Kyle Katarn, a resourceful mercenary contracted by the Rebel Alliance. The game took players on various missions to undermine the Empire’s power. Released more than 25 years ago, the game was ahead of its time, introducing features like the ability to duck, jump, swim, and look around, options that were relatively rare for FPS games back then.
The remastered version will be available for consoles and PCs when it rolls out. Gamers can expect significant visual enhancements, including support for 4K resolution and up to 120 frames per second, depending on the platform. According to Nightdive Studios, the remaster will offer “advanced 3D rendering,” “modern gamepad support, trophies and achievements, and more.”
What made Star Wars: Dark Forces noteworthy in its day wasn’t just the cutting-edge gameplay. It provided a solid narrative deeply embedded in the Star Wars universe, offering players a chance to partake in the epic battle between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. The game balanced action and storytelling in a way that many titles at the time did not, making it a memorable experience for those who played it.
