After more than a decade since its crowdfunding began, Star Citizen still hasn’t reached its promised 1.0 release. However, Cloud Imperium Games has introduced a new referral program aimed at the game’s most dedicated players, hoping to attract new recruits and keep the community engaged.
At the start of 2025, CIG CEO Chris Roberts expressed optimism about finally delivering the long-awaited vision for Star Citizen, though he didn’t provide a specific timeline. The project has famously raised over $800 million, a staggering amount that has kept the alpha afloat but has yet to produce the whole commercial release fans have been waiting for.
The new referral program, launching July 2, is designed to reward players who bring others into the game. It includes progression tracking, milestones, and various rewards such as cosmetics and even the chance to win high-value ships like the MISC Raptor, which, true to Star Citizen’s style, remains in development and will be delivered later.
One eyebrow-raising detail is the program’s terminology: potential new players are called “prospects,” meaning they have used a referral code but haven’t purchased a package yet. These prospects will carry over, giving referrers longer to convince them to join. It’s a clever way to maintain recruitment momentum, but it also feels a bit like a social experiment in persistence.
The referral system offers leaderboards for the most successful recruiters, encouraging a bit of friendly competition among the die-hards. CIG promises more frequent and meaningful unlocks, but given the game’s history, some may wonder how much will come to fruition.
It’s been over a year since Roberts last talked about the game’s “finish line” and the 1.0 commercial release. Star Citizen remains in alpha and early access, with Roberts assuring that the gameplay vision isn’t a pipe dream and won’t take 10 to 20 years to deliver. For now, the referral program is a new way to keep players invested and perhaps tempt in a few more.
What do you think about this approach? Are you tempted to try recruiting friends, or has the long wait left you skeptical? Share your thoughts below — I’m curious to hear your take on Star Citizen’s ongoing journey.
