Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined was announced during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, and producer Takeshi Ichikawa says the team expects the title’s darker, sorrowful episodes to connect with modern players more than they might have on the original release. Ichikawa told GameSpark, with an English translation available via Automaton Media, that “when it first came out, 7 was often said to have more dark and sorrowful episodes compared to other entries in the series. But nowadays, players are much more accustomed to games with darker stories.” The producer added that the remake aims to let modern players feel the story and characters’ emotions more deeply.
The remake is being positioned as a reimagining rather than a strict port. Square Enix has said the team is cutting “subplots that have little or no direct relevance” to the main quest while adding new scenarios, a move the publisher framed as tightening the narrative and refocusing the game’s pacing. The announcement materials link the title to consoles and PC, with a February 2026 window noted in the original reveal.
The order of Square Enix’s recent Dragon Quest remakes has raised eyebrows: the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and the HD-2D work on the first two games arrived ahead of this seventh entry, which many fans see as a strange sequence. Practically, Dragon Quest 7 has a reputation for being long and bloated on its original platforms. The reimagining’s removal of some side material and the inclusion of new scenarios are intended to keep the core story focused while preserving or, according to Square Enix, intensifying the moments that carry emotional weight. If the plan holds, the remake will try to keep the original’s scope but present it in a package tailored for console and PC players who are used to more mature JRPG narratives. Specific platform and edition details will come in follow-ups from Square Enix.
