Spider-Man: Brand New Day Opens With a 92% Rotten Tomatoes Score
The Tom Holland sequel is the first MCU movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home to pass the 90% mark on Rotten Tomatoes.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has started its theatrical run with a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, giving the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie the best critical average in five years.
The score puts the film just behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, which reached 93% in 2021. No other MCU release since then has crossed 90%, although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thunderbolts came close. Other recent films, including Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Captain America: Brave New World, received much weaker critical responses.
Critics Are Split, But the Overall Response Is Strong
Several reviews have praised the movie for bringing Peter Parker back to a more grounded, street-level story. The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey called it the best Spider-Man movie in more than 20 years, while The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney highlighted the emotional payoff between Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon.
TheWrap’s William Bibbiani also placed the film among the MCU’s strongest recent entries. The positive response follows a four-star review that praised Holland’s fourth solo outing for pairing straightforward web-slinging action with more personal stakes.
The film has not won over every critic. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman found it overworked and only watchable, while IndieWire’s David Ehrlich criticized its subdued tone and story. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw gave the movie three stars and argued that a more radical reboot would have served the character better.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Release Dates
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will open in theaters in the UK on July 29 and in the US on July 31. The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon.
With its early Rotten Tomatoes score now in place, the film has a chance to give Marvel one of its strongest critical runs since Avengers: Endgame. That average could still change as more reviews arrive.
