The Horizon franchise has officially crossed a massive milestone, with over 38 million units sold worldwide. This update arrives during Sony’s ongoing lawsuit against Tencent over a blatant copycat game, highlighting the remarkable popularity of Aloy and her world in just a few years.
In April 2023, Sony announced that the series had sold 32.7 million units. Since then, the number has jumped by around five million. That’s no small feat for a franchise that’s not exactly ancient; it mostly consists of two main entries plus some spin-offs and ports.
Over the last couple of years, Sony has ported Horizon Forbidden West to PC, released the spin-off LEGO Horizon Adventures, and put out Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. All these helped add to that fresh five million unit bump, alongside continued sales of the original titles.
So, how does this stack up? The franchise now comfortably sits among PlayStation’s best sellers, close to Gran Turismo (90 million+), God of War (66 million+), Marvel’s Spider-Man (50 million+), and The Last of Us (37 million+). Sony rarely updates these numbers, so it’s cool to get a recent peek at Horizon’s success.
Interestingly, this information surfaced through a lawsuit in which Sony accused Tencent of copying Horizon’s style and gameplay in their survival game, Light of Motiram. Sony even claims Tencent once tried to license the Horizon IP for their game… The legal fight aims to stop sales of this copycat, which makes sense when you think about how much Sony’s protecting one of its hottest properties.
Anyone else curious how those 38 million units break down? One commenter estimated the sales split might be around 24-25 million for Horizon Zero Dawn, 10-11 million for Horizon Forbidden West, 1-2 million for the VR game, and a few hundred thousand for LEGO Horizon Adventures. That sounds kinda reasonable, but we’ll probably never get exact numbers.
Anyway, it’s clear Sony’s pushing the Horizon series hard because it’s a serious money maker. And with Horizon 3 and Horizon Online on the way, the franchise’s sales are only going to climb higher. Are you excited to see where Aloy’s journey goes next?
