Sony says it has enough memory components to keep manufacturing its planned PS5 volume through the rest of 2026, including the period when Grand Theft Auto VI will launch. The company addressed the concern in its Q1 Consolidated Financial Results, published on July 31, as memory costs and supply limits continued to affect hardware makers.
The company’s financial report specifically referenced “the impact of memory market conditions on PlayStation 5 hardware.” Sony also said there was “no change to our plan for hardware profitability for FY26 to remain similar to FY25.”
PS5 sales fell as costs rose
Sony sold 1.6 million PS5 consoles during the first quarter of 2026, compared with 2.5 million in the same quarter last year. Hardware revenue declined by 9.8%, even as the consoles sold at higher prices.
That sales drop comes at an awkward moment for Sony. Memory shortages and higher SSD prices have pushed up the cost of building and buying hardware, while Grand Theft Auto VI is still positioned to bring a large audience to consoles when it launches on November 19, 2026.
For buyers who have been waiting for Rockstar’s next game, Sony’s statement offers some reassurance. The company expects to have enough PS5 units for its planned production target, which should give retailers more hardware to sell when demand rises around the game’s launch. It does not confirm that the market will avoid price increases or that every store will have stock.

Sony has already framed Grand Theft Auto VI as a showcase for the PS5, with messaging focused on features such as the DualSense controller, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and the console’s SSD. That wider push makes hardware availability around launch especially important, and Sony’s latest financial update suggests the company is preparing for that window rather than pulling back its production plans.
The report does not confirm a GTA 6 bundle for the PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro. A bundle would make sense as part of Sony’s launch strategy, but there is no official package to point buyers toward yet.
