Sony Confirms Major PS5 Pro Graphics Boost Coming in 2026

Sony is will deliver a considerable graphics upgrade for the PS5 Pro in 2026, focusing on an improved upscaling system called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This update could change how games look on the console by boosting image quality without demanding extra hardware power.

Mark Cerny, PlayStation’s console architect, recently spoke about the “full-fat version” of PSSR, which will be part of this upgrade. The technology, developed in partnership with AMD, uses machine learning to upscale game visuals, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS. This means games can run at higher resolutions while using the PS5 Pro’s extra power for other tasks.

What’s interesting is that the new PSSR algorithm came together faster than expected, taking about nine months to develop. It’s a “drop-in replacement” designed to be straightforward for developers to adopt, making the upgrade smoother for upcoming titles.

Cerny explained that this new algorithm is already available on PC as AMD’s FSR 4 technology but stressed that the PS5 Pro’s version won’t be a scaled-back variant. Instead, it will be a full-featured, co-developed super-resolution system, promising a genuine boost in visual fidelity when it arrives next year.

For those curious, PSSR works by enhancing picture quality through smart upscaling, allowing games to appear sharper without the performance cost of native 4K rendering. The collaboration with AMD seems to have accelerated the development of this technology faster than expected, which is good news if you’re holding out for a more visually appealing PlayStation experience.

Will this upgrade finally elevate the PS5 Pro to a new level of visual quality? Time will tell, but it’s encouraging to see Sony investing in smarter graphics tech rather than just raw power. What do you think about this approach? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!
