Tactical Adventures, the studio behind the CRPG Solasta 2, says it deliberately leans into a different design approach than Baldur’s Gate 3 even though players will naturally compare the two. In an interview with Eurogamer, CEO Mathieu Girard and marketing director Pierre Worgague explained why the comparison is understandable and where the teams part ways.
Smaller studio, different priorities
Girard pointed out the obvious size gap between Larian Studios and Tactical Adventures, noting that Larian employs “hundreds of full-time developers” while Tactical Adventures is a roughly “40-ish person” team. That difference helps explain why Girard says Larian can deliver “a narrative depth for example that we cannot have.”
Rather than chase the same narrative scope, Girard emphasized areas where Solasta 2 aims to stand out. “Our combat is very interesting and deep and gritty – lots of possibilities,” he told Eurogamer. He also highlighted the game’s world map exploration as a way to make players feel like they are “discover[ing] a world brought to life, with many options and many adventures.”
On storytelling, Girard described a deliberate shift away from a single-character arc. “You play this full party and you live the story of a family instead of a personal quest of one character, so it’s a different way of telling a story. It’s more a tabletop story, actually, of four characters around the table telling the story of their party and their family.”
They bought the team copies of Baldur’s Gate 3
Worgague said Tactical Adventures bought copies of Baldur’s Gate 3 for the entire development team when it launched and that the staff “absolutely loved the game.” Girard suggested Larian’s success has broadened the audience for party-based D&D-style CRPGs, theorizing that BG3 helped create “an appetite for such games.” He added that while Solasta 2 may not reach the “same scope and dimensions” as Baldur’s Gate 3, it can offer something recognizably familiar for players who “want to have more.”
Solasta 2 is available now in Steam Early Access.
