Slay the Spire 2 will target 2025 for launch, and developer Mega Crit confirmed plans for a Steam Early Access release on PC, MacOS, and Linux. That matters because the studio migrated engines, and early access could shape what returns from the original game.
Mega Crit formally revealed the sequel at the Triple-I Showcase and published a stylish trailer that teased returning heroes and new threats. The developer also addressed its engine in an IGN report explaining the switch to Godot, and confirmed on the Steam discussion boards that there will be no microtransactions.
Early access is planned. The team confirmed the plan in a Steam blog post announcing an Early Access launch on PC, MacOS, and Steam Deck (Linux). Community feedback shaped the first game’s progress, and Mega Crit says early access will again let players report bugs and help translate while features are adjusted before the full release.
The reveal and store pages also lay out characters and mechanics. The official Steam page names the Necrobinder as a starter class and the community FAQ on Steam explains that the full early access roster hasn’t been locked in: the FAQ page. Trailers show the Necrobinder summoning a skeletal hand called Osty and a new Doom system that affects card behavior.
Design updates are spilling out in Megacrit’s monthly notes. The Neowsletter discussed hiring an art director and animator to broaden the game’s look, and later issues outlined UI tweaks, new visual effects, and the Enchantments mechanic. The April update added an affliction system, March introduced quests such as the Byrdonis Egg companion via the quest preview, and the May note detailed card keyword changes in the May issue.
Events, card pools, and quality-of-life tools are being overhauled as well. The team described an event redesign that trims consequence-free options, showcased colorless card changes, and previewed new relic and potion tracking in a post about relics and potions. The devs are clearly reworking familiar systems rather than leaving them untouched.
Some details are still vague. A prominent content creator, FrostPrime, said on their livestream that Casey Yano noted a planned Thursday launch day, which only narrows the calendar slightly. There are also community posts calling out missing characters, as fans cited the official X account for comments about the Defect absence, a Megacrit X post about missing Defect.
