Rare will start Sea of Thieves Season 21 with a Free Play Weekend on September 17, giving players on all supported platforms a chance to join the pirate adventure without an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Microsoft detailed the seasonal plans in an Xbox Wire announcement. The September Game Pass schedule had already listed Sea of Thieves Season 21’s September 17 launch and free-play window, while this announcement adds its social features, rewards, and Golden Legends Sweepstakes.
The free period will run from September 17 at 15:00 UTC through September 21 at 17:00 UTC. Season 21 will also add new social tools, rewards, events, Custom Seas content, and bonuses celebrating 25 years of Xbox.
Parley Pennant gives crews a new way to talk
The new Parley Pennant will let crews signal that they want to communicate with nearby ships. Players can equip it through their ship’s flag box, then use the opportunity to propose an Alliance, work through challenges together, or simply compare pirate cosmetics.
Crews that make good use of the pennant during the in-game Talk like a Pirate Day Event can earn the Parley Proficiency Sails. The refreshed Seasonal track will also lead toward the Flame’s Light Lantern.
Golden Legends Sweepstakes begins September 17
The Microsoft Rewards Sea of Thieves: Golden Legends Sweepstakes will run from September 17 through October 31 in the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Participants can enter through Bing wallpaper downloads or Microsoft Rewards points.
The grand prize in each territory will be a one-of-a-kind Golden Legends Xbox Series X with a matching controller and one year of Xbox Game Pass Premium. Additional controllers and subscriptions will also be available as second-place prizes. The sweepstakes is subject to its terms.
In participating territories, Microsoft Rewards points can also be exchanged for Ancient Coins to spend in the Pirate Emporium. For a limited time, eligible bundles will include the Loquacious Figurehead, while Xbox Game Pass subscribers can claim the Vociferous Speaking Trumpet as an in-game benefit between September 17 and October 31.
Season 21 adds more events and rewards
Players who would rather enjoy a quieter view of the seas can select the Lone Survivor Dynamic Background from the Xbox Personalisation Menu. Season 21 will also feature regular events such as Fight Nights and Bilge Rats Weekenders, along with continuing expansions to Custom Seas mode.
Whether crews play during the free weekend or continue through the new season, the refreshed reward track gives them another reason to raise the Parley Pennant and head back out to sea.
