Sanitarium Enhanced Will Bring a Disturbing 1998 Point-and-Click Horror Game to Consoles Later in 2026
The reissue will add widescreen gameplay, controller support, optional hints, and a gallery featuring behind-the-scenes and cut content.
Sanitarium Enhanced will bring the disturbing 1998 point-and-click horror adventure to PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2 later in 2026. The reissue is also planned for Steam, with Steam Deck support, and will add several quality-of-life improvements without changing the strange story that made the original so memorable.
Sanitarium follows Max, a disfigured amnesiac who wakes inside a bizarre, rundown asylum with no idea how he got there. Escaping the institution sends him through a series of deeply unsettling locations, including a village inhabited by mutated children, a town overrun by enormous insects, and a bizarre circus featuring a squid man and a dog man.
Its point-and-click structure turns every room into a hunt for clues, objects, and the awful truth behind Max’s past. The asylum establishes that uneasy tone immediately, with inmates repeatedly striking their heads against stone walls and blood smeared across the corridors.
Released in April 1998, Sanitarium arrived during a packed year for PC games that also included Half-Life, Unreal, StarCraft, Thief, and Baldur’s Gate. Its grim atmosphere, surreal storytelling, and deliberately uncomfortable sense of humor helped it stand apart from the more familiar adventures of the era.
Sanitarium Enhanced adds modern control options
The biggest changes in Sanitarium Enhanced are focused on presentation and accessibility. Widescreen support will cover gameplay as well as cutscenes, while full controller support will make it easier to play with face buttons and analog sticks instead of relying on a mouse.
An optional hint mode will also be available. Important interactable objects can blend into the scenery, especially through the original game’s dated visual presentation, so players who get stuck will have assistance available without being forced to use it.
The release will also address unspecified legacy bugs and issues. Ziggurat is publishing the reissue, which will include an extras gallery with behind-the-scenes material and content that was cut from the original game. The Sanitarium Enhanced Steam page confirms the new edition alongside the existing Sanitarium release on Steam.
Steam Deck and console versions are coming later in 2026
Steam Deck optimizations will be part of the new edition, giving handheld players a version built around its expanded control support. The PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2 releases are scheduled for later in 2026, but a more precise date has not been announced.
Sanitarium Enhanced looks aimed at players who want to revisit one of the stranger PC adventures from the late 1990s, as well as anyone who bounced off the original’s sometimes-punishing interface. The optional hints and controller support could make Max’s unsettling trip easier to approach without sanding away its eerie identity.
